A Conversation

I had an interesting conversation with a stranger today. We talked about life, and how one person can be born into wealth, while another can be born into poverty. She lamented on the unfairness of it all, and that got me thinking…

There are a million factors in our lives that we can’t control, especially at birth. Heck, none of us asked to be born in the first place. We simply are. We make do with the hand that’s dealt to us. You can’t blame a person born with extremely good looks, who uses his physical traits to succeed in life, anymore than you can blame someone born with brains and eventually becomes a millionaire at Silicon Valley.

Yes, it’s unfortunate that society puts more value on one over the other. But you’re guaranteed to have an easier time changing yourself over changing public perception. Complaining about it won’t get you any closer to happiness. Put the work in, and success will come. You might not have access to shortcuts that others are brought into this world with, but you’ll get there in the end.

Android Lollipop & One M8

Lollipop has been out for quite a while now. However, releases have been limited to Nexus devices, the LG G3 and (surprisingly) the Nvidia Shield Tablet.

Fortunately, clever developers from Skydragon have released a GPE Lollipop rom for HTC One M8 users.

I took the risk of unlocking and rooting my M8 to test this out. Installation was a bit tricky, and I almost had a heart attack when my phone’s internal memory was wiped.

I won’t bore you with all of Lollipop’s new features, but below are some of my favorites.

  • Lock screen notifications

Finally! Something I’ve missed from IOS for ages.  Android now displays all notifications on the lock screen, regardless of the application.

  • Chrome tabs in App Switcher

I can’t get over how awesome this is.  I no longer have to strain my thumb to switch tabs :)

  • Material Design

It’s gorgeous. IOS 7 impressed me with it’s revamped aesthetics, but Lollipop takes the crown when it comes to design. I’ve always felt like IOS prioritized looks over function, and I’m happy that Google balanced everything together nicely. Material Design complements Android’s deep functionalities.

Interstellar

Interstellar is a flawed movie.  A flawed movie worth watching twice.

Yes, it’s not perfect. Ask anyone and they’ll proudly point out all the flaws and plot holes of Nolan’s newest movie.

But there are a hundred different reasons why I fell in love with this movie. Heck, most of them aren’t even related to the genre itself.

What I enjoyed most out of this movie was the underlying theme of love. Strip away all the elements of time-travel and science fiction, and what you get is a movie about a promise. A promise made between a father and his daughter. This single promise drives the entire movie forward, and is what separates it from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Yes, Kubrick’s masterpiece is undeniably the better science fiction movie. I doubt you’ll find anyone arguing that. But what 2001 lacked was human warmth. I never connected with any of the characters, never really cared for their motivations. Nolan recognizes this, and has adapted his movie to suit todays world.  A world where the average moviegoer is no longer dazzled by expensive visual effects and massive explosions.

Despite it’s weaknesses, Interstellar is my favorite movie of 2014. Praise this movie for it’s strengths, and love it for it’s faults.

What better way to start a blog off than with a cat photo?

I’ll be honest, it’s been ages since I last blogged about anything. Even then, previous endeavors were limited to photos and little snippets of commentary.

This time, I’ll be in full writer mode. Why? I need to work on my writing, and I definitely need to improve my story telling.

I’ve been inspired by a number of authors making a living writing blogs full time. Hopefully, I can keep myself motivated enough and not let this attempt fizzle out.

So what will this blog have? Well, everything! I’m passionate about a lot of things, be it video games, technology, movies, and even writing itself. There’s an endless supply of topics for me to write about, and I hope that you, the audience, will find enjoyable enough to read :)
